Precision Breeding Guided by Collaboration

The processing tomato industry continues to face shifting market conditions, including reduced planted acreage and increased pressure to maximize available resources. As trial space becomes more limited, breeding programs must be increasingly strategic about which varieties to advance, while continuing to generate the robust performance data needed to bring successful varieties to market.

Collaboration Drives Innovation
Leveraging Advanced Data to Improve Decision Making

To address this challenge, HM.CLAUSE relies on collaboration between our breeders, product developers, growers, and dealers to guide our variety advancement process.

By incorporating advanced statistical tools, our breeders increase the accuracy of parent and hybrid selection, helping us respond more quickly to evolving agronomic challenges and market needs. To further strengthen evaluations, our Product Development Lead, Alex Rader, has developed a precision-focused statistical model built on years of performance data provided by growers and dealers.

Together, these insights allow us to make more informed decisions earlier in the breeding process, focusing resources on the varieties most likely to deliver value for growers and processors.

"The strength of our processing tomato program comes from the information we build together with our growers, processors, and dealers,” says Shantel Martinez, Global Processing Tomato Breeder. "The insights we gain from conversations, field evaluations, and historical performance data help us focus our breeding pipeline on the traits that matter most.”

One result of this collaborative, data-driven approach is HM 0371, a new early-maturing processing tomato variety designed to deliver strong performance from the start of the season.

HM 0371 combines high yield potential with excellent fruit quality and a robust disease resistance package, including F3, For, TMV, and powdery mildew resistance. Its early maturity helps processors begin the harvest season with confidence, while the expanded resistance package provides growers with greater flexibility across production environments.
